Background of the Study
National Health Insurance Schemes (NHIS) are designed to improve access to healthcare by providing financial protection to individuals and families. These schemes aim to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and enhance the accessibility of medical services (Nwaorgu et al., 2023). In Nigeria, the NHIS was introduced to promote universal health coverage, with the goal of improving health outcomes and reducing inequalities in healthcare access.
For healthcare professionals, including nurses, the NHIS can have both direct and indirect effects on job performance. On the one hand, it may enhance nurses' ability to deliver high-quality care by ensuring timely and adequate payment for services rendered. On the other hand, challenges related to delayed payments, inadequate coverage, and bureaucratic hurdles can create barriers to effective job performance. At the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), the implementation of NHIS presents both opportunities and challenges in terms of job performance among nurses.
This study will examine the effect of NHIS on nurses' job performance at UMTH, considering factors such as job satisfaction, workload, motivation, and the quality of care provided. By exploring the relationship between NHIS implementation and job performance, this research aims to inform policy adjustments that could optimize the scheme’s impact on healthcare workers.
Statement of the Problem
Although the National Health Insurance Scheme was designed to improve healthcare delivery, there is limited research on its effect on nurses' job performance in Nigerian hospitals. At UMTH, the NHIS is operational, but it is unclear how it influences nurses’ job satisfaction, motivation, and overall performance. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the effect of NHIS on nurses' job performance at UMTH.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of the NHIS on nurses’ job performance at UMTH.
2. To examine the relationship between NHIS implementation and nurses' job satisfaction, motivation, and quality of care.
3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in delivering care under the NHIS framework.
Research Questions
1. How does the NHIS affect nurses' job performance at UMTH?
2. What is the relationship between NHIS implementation and nurses' job satisfaction and motivation?
3. What challenges do nurses face in providing care under the NHIS, and how do these challenges affect job performance?
Research Hypotheses
1. The NHIS positively influences nurses’ job performance at UMTH.
2. Nurses’ job satisfaction and motivation are significantly improved under the NHIS framework.
3. Challenges such as delays in payment and inadequate coverage negatively affect nurses' job performance under the NHIS.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the effects of the NHIS on nurses’ job performance at UMTH. Data will be collected using surveys and interviews with nurses. Limitations may include the difficulty in isolating the effects of NHIS from other factors influencing job performance, as well as potential biases in self-reported data.
